We’re talking about the neighbourhood backstreets and lively avenues that locals love; the places packed with independent shops and creative people, where a brand-new hi-fi listening bar will share the space with an old-school grocer or a centuries-old pub.  This year, to create our annual ranking of the world’s coolest streets, we asked our global network of local editors and experts to nominate the street that epitomises the very best of their city. Time Out’s global travel team then narrowed down the list and ranked each street against criteria including food, drink, culture, fun and community spirit.  From Saturday samba sessions in Rio de Janeiro to a shapeshifting shopping street in Osaka, every avenue, alleyway and side street on this year’s ranking is unique to its hometown. So, what are the neighbourhoods that fit the bill this year? To find out, we asked our network of writers and editors across a breadth of cities to nominate the vibiest district in their hometown right now. From the outside, The Notary barely hints at what’s waiting behind its unassuming door. Step inside and the world outside slips away: soft music, carefully designed lighting and even a signature scent create an instant mood shift. Within minutes, I’d forgotten I’d been hauling a suitcase down cobbled Bruges lanes (made for carriages, not for cars, as the receptionist noted) just moments earlier. The Notary isn’t a large-scale luxury hotel –⁠ it’s a converted 19th-century manor with just nine suites and a very particular sense of style. Staying here feels like borrowing someone’s fantasy life for the weekend: elaborate interiors, quiet walled gardens, and a hidden canal-side terrace you can only spot when walking through the property to its very end, as though you’re being rewarded for finding a secret level. Why stay at The Notary  Because it’s a whole mood. Henri Paul Joseph van Caillie bought the manor in the late 1800s, and his family practised as notaries here for generations. It still feels like a home (albeit a castle-like one) with its sweeping staircase, grand dining room, and a magnificent private garden leading to a terrace on the city’s first hand-dug canal, where ducks drift past and it’s quiet enough to hear a breeze in the trees. That sense of luxurious seclusion is the biggest draw. Step inside – or out into the gardens – and it feels worlds away from a city famous for its visitor crowds. Bruges is gorgeous – but it’s also packed. When the tourist crowds get overwhelming, this quiet four-room guesthouse is a welcome escape. Follow a tree-lined canal path (you’re in the Venice of the North after all), cross a small stone bridge, and you’ve reached your destination: a leafy cul-de-sac where charming old townhouses, all UNESCO-protected, line the street. Parked cargo bikes in front make it clear this is a genuine family neighbourhood. At the door of a 1905 mansion, which differentiates itself through the contemporary glass cube built into its roof, you punch in a code you received by email and step straight into the hallway. Tiny, Kevin, or one of their kids might greet you if they’re home, and within minutes, you feel settled in like a local. What is the Belfort Tower? Rising proudly from the Markt, this 13th-century bell tower is Bruges’ most iconic landmark - and it has the UNESCO status to prove it. Built as a symbol of independence and wealth (less fortunate towns had to borrow church towers), it once housed city charters and the treasury. Its bells weren’t just for show either: they set the rhythm of daily life and warned of danger. Is it worth visiting?  Between the history, the striking Gothic architecture, and the 366-step climb rewarded with panoramic views, it ticks all the boxes. Bonus: the 47-bell carillon. What is the Groeninge Museum? This museum holds a knockout collection covering 600 years of Belgian visual art. Back in the 15th century, Bruges was one of Europe’s major powerhouses: not just for trade, but also for artists. The museum captures that golden age and what came after. Is it worth visiting? Absolutely: This is a cornerstone of Belgian art history. Bruges was the cradle of the influential Flemish Primitives, and Groeninge Museum is where you’ll find masterpieces by Jan van Eyck (including his celebrated “Madonna with Canon Van der Paele”) and Hans Memling. The collection moves chronologically through time, including striking works from the Renaissance and 20th-century Flemish Expressionists. Who’s it for? The vast Art Deco complex spans 33,000 square metres and houses everything from concert halls to galleries. It’s one of the capital’s most important cultural institutions - and a beautiful one, too. Is it worth visiting?  Definitely. Bozar’s lineup is refreshingly all over the place, so odds are there is something for you. One day you’re catching a David Hockney retrospective, the next a Damon Albarn gig, a Beethoven recital, or a contemporary dance performance. It hosts exhibitions, screenings, lectures, festivals, club nights, and literary readings, all under one beautiful roof. Bonus points for the design-forward museum shop, great for browsing art books or picking up an original souvenir. What else is nearby? The Cinematek is right next door if you’re after a deep-dive into film history. Cross the street to refuel at cosy-cool Café Boudin, or head to Mont des Arts for a postcard view of the city.
